Elements that improve the rutting resistance of Micro-surfacing mixture?

Micro-surfacing contractors

The micro-surfacing emulsion is widely used by road contractors around the world to increase the serviceability of asphalt pavement while addressing surface problems on roads. It is convenient, effective and budget-friendly when it comes to preserving existing asphalt pavements. Road contractors use the best micro-surfacing emulsion to have the best results.

Micro-surfacing pavement treatment is considered to be the best method of pavement maintenance. Back in the 1980s, it was used widely in road construction in order to retain sturdiness and shine. Road constructors use it to restore the skid resistance of the pavement, which is actually a mix of asphalt, water, bitumen emulsion and crushed aggregates. It can not only improve skid resistance but also the smoothness and waterproof property of asphalt.

The benefits of Micro-surfacing Mixture

Many tests are carried out like Hamburg Wheel-track testing to determine the performance of micro-surfacing emulsion. Many properties of micro-surfacing emulsion and quantity of properties can either make or break the micro-surfacing solution. Immediate opening to traffic is also attainable. However, the resistance of micro-surfacing emulsion, as well as resistance to heavy traffic, are generally average which leads to a shorter lifespan. So, to increase the lifespan of the micro-surface roads, the carefully manufactured micro-surfacing emulsion has to be used.

  • Fiber

Proper addition and use of fiber can literally improve the performance of micro-surfacing. The selection of binder also plays a vital role as it influences the effect of fiber. Fiber can absorb water as well as increase low-temperature performance. Basalt fiber and polypropylene are examples of fiber used in micro-surfacing emulsion. Like fiber type, fiber dosage can also influence rutting resistance. The bridging effect and absorption capability of fiber in emulsion provides a three-dimensional dispersion state which in turn increases cracking resistance. Other than improving rutting resistance, the use of fiber can also reduce the cost of the material.

  • Aggregate

Aggregates also influence the performance of micro-surfacing emulsion. The mineral aggregate used must be the type of grade specified to increase the durability and cracking resistance of micro-surfacing emulsion. The aggregate must have high quality. Likewise, aggregate gradation and asphalt aggregate ratio can directly influence the rutting resistance of the micro-surfacing emulsion. Aggregate and filler used must meet the technical requirements of the specification.

  • Asphalt binder

Asphalt binder is another element that influences the formation of the strength of micro-surfacing. Depending on the type and quality of the binder, the rutting resistance of micro-surfacing will also increase.

Micro-surfacing takes place on upper layer of the asphalt pavement and the ruttig resistance of the micro-surfacing emulsion can be increased with the right blend of properties such as asphalt, aggregate, fiber and water. So that, once the temperature goes down there will be no cracks leading to the degradation of the water-proofing effect. Plus, the serviceability of asphalt roads can be extended.
