Roads like buildings are not meant to last forever. Don’t get me wrong here, roads have a huge asset life, but they are not free from wear and tear. Meet the road’s worst enemy, Potholes. Gradual erosion by being run over by thousands of vehicles every day causes these potholes to grow in size and depth.
Stopping these potholes once and forever is inevitable but here are five of the best ways to increase the life of your road using pothole repair materials.
- Throw-and-roll pothole repair
This is the most basic way of pothole repair. It’s as easy as putting pothole repair materials into a pothole and driving over it with a tractor, bulldozer, or huge truck; any heavy vehicle will suffice. While the throw-and-roll approach gives temporary pothole relief, it only repairs a pothole for a short period of time. It also has a high rate of failure. Only use it if you don’t have any other options.
- Spray-injection pothole repair
This repair necessitates the use of specialist tools. Blower the water and/or debris out of the pothole first. Spray a tack coat of binder on the sides and bottom of the pothole after that, then blast pothole repair material and clump into the hole. After that, apply a layer of clump to the patched area. This method has the advantage of not requiring the pothole to be compacted.
- Full-Depth Roadway Pothole Repair
This is the most difficult and expensive process on the list. However, it is also the most effective and long-lasting repair option, which may save you money and pothole repair material in the long term. The current asphalt is milled and blended with a cement and water aggregate, which is then compacted to form pothole repair material. After that, it is used to build a long-lasting asphalt surface. For all intents and purposes, the potholes are effectively filled in with the same asphalt as before.
- Semi-permanent Pothole Repair
This procedure is considered one of the greatest ways to fix potholes, despite the fact that it is not made using permanent pothole repair materials. Potholes are repaired by draining all of the water and debris. The pothole repair material is used to fill the hole once it has been cleaned. Finally, a roller or vibrating plate is used to condense the patch. Because it’s only meant to last a few months, this is referred to as a semi-permanent repair or patch job.
- Cold Mix Asphalt
This technique entails gradually laying a cold mix asphalt pothole repair material into the pothole. Every time a layer is applied, it is compacted down with one’s hand or a compactor, resulting in a fresh, durable surface. The advantage of this pothole backfilling approach is that cars can drive over the pothole repair material right after the job is finished.
