High Durability Roads with Polymer Modified Bitumen

Polymer-modified bitumen creates roads that last a long time.

Bitumen has been around for a while, and it’s becoming more and more valuable as an engineering material, but its original use dates back thousands of years. Virgin polymers, recycled polymers, and polymer blends are all of great interest for use in the modification of bitumen. In particular, over the past two decades, there has been an uptick in the number of suppliers focusing on polymer-modified bitumen, and thus, an increase in the number of scholarly articles published after being subjected to rigorous peer review.

Early research into polymer-modified bitumen tended to concentrate on engineering and empirical measurements like aging and softening point. The impact of polymer addition on various bitumen properties, polymer-bitumen morphology, and polymer-bitumen interactions, however, has been studied using a wide variety of methods in recent years.

Pavements, roads for heavy-duty traffic, and home roofing solutions that can withstand extreme weather conditions often make use of polymer-modified bitumen (PMB), one of the specially designed and engineered bitumen grades. According to vendors, Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) is a normal bitumen with the addition of polymer, which gives it additional strength, high cohesiveness, and resistance to fatigue, stripping, and deformations.

Heavy-duty traffic and severe weather conditions necessitate the use of engineered Bitumen Grades in the construction of pavements. Adding a polymer of elastomeric or non-elastomeric nature to standard bitumen alters its properties, making the resulting mixture better able to resist fatigue and permanent deformations of roads.

When polymers are mixed into conventional bitumen, the result is a material with greater elasticity. Styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) is the polymer that is added to serve as a binder modifier. SBS polymer-modified bitumen is used by suppliers primarily to give pavement, roads, and building plans a longer lifespan. PMB displays characteristics such as:

  • Intensified stiffness
  • elevated deformation resistance
  • strengthened resistance to cracking and stripping
  • More reliable protection from moisture intrusion
  • Long lastingness

The benefits of polymer-modified bitumen quoted by suppliers include a more robust road with a higher Marshall stability value and higher rigidity.

  • improved resistance to rain and standing water.
  • No peeling paint and craters in the pavement.
  • Lessening aggregate pore sizes results in improved resistance to permanent deformation and consequently less rutting and raveling.
  • Stronger resilience

Analysis

Although it is generally agreed that modified asphalts are superior, not all asphalt mixtures or treatments require modification. It is important to assess each application individually to see if the traffic load, expected service life, environmental conditions, and desired performance warrant the use of modifiers. Financially, modified asphalts may be worthwhile.

When bitumen is modified for use in structural layers, the goal is to make those layers more resistant to permanent deformation at high road temperatures without sacrificing their properties at lower temperatures.

As tire pressures, axle loads, and traffic volumes rise, so does the demand for polymer-modified bitumen suppliers to keep up.

Both increasing the elastic component and decreasing the viscous component, and stiffening the bitumen to decrease the total viscoelastic response of the layer, can improve performance by lowering the permanent strain.
