When it comes to paving roads, bitumen emulsion is an indispensable tool. Anionic slow setting bitumen emulsion (SS1) and cationic slow setting bitumen emulsion (CSS1h) are two types of emulsions used for road construction, together with cationic slow setting emulsion-1 (CSS1) and cationic slow setting emulsion-1h (CSS1h) to be procured from bitumen road emulsion suppliers.
Priming Layer of Cationic Bitumen Emulsion:
- Cationic bitumen emulsion has limitations due to weather and the seasons.
Do not apply the cationic bituminous emulsion primer while the surface is wet, there is a dust storm, or it is raining, cloudy, or windy outside. Bitumen road emulsion suppliers recommend
you should not apply the surface treatment primer if the temperature in the shade is below 10 degrees.
- Construction Methods for Prime Coat using Cationic Bitumen Emulsion:
- Tools for the Prime Coat:
Primers must be distributed using a self-propelled pressure distributor with pneumatic tyres, capable of spraying the cationic bitumen emulsion evenly at the required rate and temperature.
- Surface Preparation for Prime Coat:
The surface to be primed has to be cleaned clean, dust-free, and dry. It must conform to the required dimensions and grading. It must be smooth and undisturbed, without ruts or any divvying up of materials.
- Priming with Cationic Bitumen Emulsion:
- You need to use a motorized broom to thoroughly sweep the surface of the base.
- To use an air compressor to remove any surface dust before procuring from bitumen road emulsion suppliers
- Immediately prior to priming, the surface must be moistened to help the primer wet the surface equally and penetrate the base. It is important to avoid getting any water into the voids, but to avoid using too much water.
- Bituminous primer shall be sprayed or distributed uniformly over the dry surface at a rate of 6.0 to 9.0 kg/Sqm using a self-propelled sprayer equipped with self-heating arrangement, suitable pump.
- Primers can be applied at a controlled pace and temperature, provided that a compressor of sufficient capacity is used in conjunction with a spray bar fitted with nozzles that maintain a consistent volume or pressure.
- The primer sprayer’s speed and nozzle bar height must be calibrated on the trial stretch before spraying can begin. This is done so that the necessary amount of primer may be applied.
- The optimal spraying temperature is between 30 and 55 degrees.
- Primers can be applied at any temperature so long as they can be sprayed through the spray bar’s nozzles and onto the granular base’s surface evenly and in sufficient amounts.
- The pace at which the binder spreads may be measured with a tray test as referred by bitumen road emulsion suppliers.
3. Primers should be cured:
Surfaces treated with cationic bitumen emulsion primer require at least 24 hours of curing time to let the primer to fully penetrate the base course and release its volatiles. The prepared surface must be fully dried and non-sticky before it is opened to traffic.
4. The Prime Coat Quality Assurance Procedures and Routine Tests
Bitumen road emulsion suppliers recommend the following must be checked as part of quality assurance testing. First, the binder’s quality. The Recommended Working Temperature of the Binder. Lastly, the distribution of the binder and how quickly it does so.
