Repairing Potholes – The Right and Wrong Way

Potholes appear on almost every road at some point. Potholes appear for a variety of reasons, including age, bad weather, and poorly paved roads. But how do they get fixed? They can be fixed the right way (resulting in long-term improvements on the road) or the wrong way (resulting in them quickly opening up again). Potholes must be repaired quickly using road patching material and correctly to prevent the road from deteriorating further.

How do potholes form?

Water is the cause of potholes. Even in places where the weather is stable, water seeps into the areas beneath the road and then expands and contracts with changing temperatures. This problem is exacerbated in areas with extreme weather.

Vehicles continue to drive over the road as the water expands and contracts. This wears down the weak section of road, eventually causing it to open. As a result, a pothole forms.

When is it impossible to repair potholes?

Small hairline cracks of less than an eighth of an inch can’t be filled with asphalt, so they’re usually left alone. However, if a large network of these cracks covers an area, a surface seal can be applied to the area. The surface seal must be able to seep into the cracks and bind them securely.

How do we repair potholes?
The wrong way

Filling in the open hole in the road or parking lot with new asphalt seems simple enough, right? This is only a stopgap for the time being. The pothole will almost certainly reappear, and the area between the old and new asphalt will become the road’s most vulnerable point.

Less-experienced and less-professional workers frequently use asphalt as road patching material to fill in potholes because it is quick and easy. These types of repairs are common in developing countries and impoverished areas where workers, equipment, and training are scarce.

The right way

There are several steps that must be followed in order to properly repair a pothole. And depending on the size of the crack or pothole, different procedures are used.

  • Cleaning the pothole
  • Measuring the pothole
  • Repairing the cracks
  • Filling the cracks
